The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has collaborated with digital artist collective Deafbeef to release a new non-fungible token (NFT) artwork. The piece, titled “Electric Purgatory,” is a digital animation that explores the concept of technology’s impact on human spirituality.
According to Deafbeef, the artwork is designed to be experienced as a “digital shrine,” with elements that reference both ancient religious iconography and contemporary technology. The piece was minted as a one-of-a-kind NFT and sold for 1.5 ETH (approximately $5,600) on the OpenSea NFT marketplace.
The collaboration with Deafbeef is part of LACMA’s broader efforts to engage with digital art and explore the possibilities of blockchain technology. The museum has previously acquired NFT artworks and has launched a blockchain-based membership program that allows members to access exclusive content and experiences.
